Spain has an abundance of chickpeas. Garbanzos, as they are called here, are put in all sorts of soups and stews, traditional dishes and so forth. Chickpea craving in the night? If the convenience store is open, you’re bound to find a jar of chickpeas nestled on the shelf at a reasonable price.
Unfortunately, the vital link between plentiful chickpeas and subsequent falafel and hummus production never seem to have been made. There are scandalously few falafel shops or restaurants in Spain. Want hummus? You will probably have to make your own.
Things are changing, and we want to be part of that change.
We made the mistake of attempting to walk across the entire north of Spain in an arduous challenge called ‘the Camino de Santiago.’ It was falawful. During this time, we only managed to eat three falafels, which in five weeks of walking, is a pitifully small amount. We gorged on bread and chickpeas, sure, but the deep fried coriander infused crispy goodness of a decent, hefty and satisfying falafel wrap were few and far between.
We seek to challenge this negative trend.
Next year we intend to drive around the route in a specially designed ‘falafel -mobile’ (there is no way I’m walking that far ever again, you have to be mad to do it) . We will provide cheap, delicious falafel to incredibly high standards for those who need it most.
Falafel shouldn’t just be a drunken midnight feast- it should be part of a normal and balanced diet.
Viva Falafel!
You can read about our falafel experiences along the camino here, and if you want to read us complaining about the trip you can do so here.
España tiene un montón de garbanzos. Estan ponen dentro muchas sopas y guisos traditionales etc.
Falafel no sólo debe consumirse estando borracho.
Viva Falafel!
